BBC: Winter Olympics 2010

Here begins “the story of Akiak and his quest to find the missing head of Ilanaaq, a stack of rock in human form, which sits on the mountain above Whistler, where the skiiing and sliding events [of the Winter Olympics] will take place.”

A stunning animation made for the BBC coverage of the Vancouver Winter Olympics 2010, following the “summer” animation Monkey.

The Inuit animation has been produced at Studio AKA and directed by Marc Craste. Designer: Jon Klassen.

Baloji ft. Konono n°1 – Karibu Ya Bintou

A visceral short film, shot on the streets of Kinshasa, to accompany this great track by Baloji, former MC of Starflam, a Belgian rapper with Congolese roots. Karibu Ya Bintou is the first single off his upcoming album, entitled Kinshasa Succursale and set for release on February 2010.

You Ruined Everything is the story of the morbid aftermaths of a morbid love(?) relationship. Combining a grotesque setup, an unreal photography and a non annoying voice over (a touch of Dexter, I’d say) the film manages to be funnily disturbing. Or disturbingly funny.

Goat the Head is a death metal band from Trondheim in Norway. Members are: Per Spjøtvold, Ketil Sæther, Kenneth Kapstad and Trond Frønes. Darwinian Minions is a single taken from their debut album, entitled Simian Supremacy and released in 2007 for Tabu Recordings.

No clue about what goes on in this short animation, the titles for a comedy show made at Visorama, but it sure looks funny.

A Grande Família (The Great Family) is a Brazilian television comedy, which airs on the Globo Network, and tells the story of a typical lower middle-class family living in a suburb neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro.

The theme song is by Dudu Nobre.

One in a series of IDs based on the concept of “The Other Side”, created in 2007 for Fox Argentina and their channel Fox Movies which was about to be launched in South America and Japan.

The spots were produced at Nervo and directed by Nando Costa. Music and sound design by created by Darrin Wiener aka Plastiq Phantom.

The animation of the birds flocking has been made with an application developed in Processing by Robert Hodgin at TBG.

Manquer is a short film made for the 48 Hour Film Project in 2007 by Milk, the joint venture of filmmakers Matt Daniels (now at Thinklab) and Sean Pecknold (now at Grandchildren).

Rapa Nui

The short movie – the work of Florian Belmonte, Chloé Bonnet, Cyrille Chauvin, Gaëlle Diot and Eleonora Marinoni, students of LISAA – offers an improbable as well as picturesque explanation for the moai monoliths, the giant stone heads to be found on Easter Island.

I’m about to read about the rise and fall of the Rapa Nui society in Jared Diamond’s Collapse (great book, so far) but it’s nice to see the story from a different point of view.
