Devendra Banhart – Carmensita

Grandma! I love you in a salad way.

Devendra Banhart: Carmensita - MPEG-4 clip
A ludicrously faux bollywood film starring Natalie Portman as the damsel in distress, Devendra Banhart as her savior, and (not sure) Kat Dennings as the Goddess Kali.

Carmensita is a song from Devendra Banhart’s latest album, entitled Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon and released on September 2007 for XL Recordings.

The music video was directed by Skinny, the collective comprised of David Hache, Dori Oskowitz and Marc Edouard Leon.

I am torn between how awesome this short film is, and how disrespectful it is to India cinema. In the end, it is a fantastic parody – even if not representational of the current state of films coming from India. Kudos!

The man dancing in the middle with the sword at 3:51 looks a lot like Max Gazzé. He’s an Italian singer and his videos are often quite strange but… I don’t see how he could ended up being in an american indie clip.
    Is it really him?
