Exploring the work of Igor Kovalyov and the rest of the stuff on Global Tantrum (the adult division of Klasky Csupo Studios), I found this funny movie, You, Animal, and a series of five webisodes, inspired to the work of Charles Bukowski. Warning: Bukowski it's really Not Suitable For Work. EDIT: it's Not Suitable For Anywhere! I mean: the title Ass-fucked by an iguana is self explanatory.

IGOR KOVALYOV - Bird in the Window

Wow! A lot symbolism at work, here. I'm not very good with symbols, but I really enjoyed what I've seen and, I hope, you're about to see too. A man returns to visit a woman who lives with a gardener, two Chinese men, and a small child. The man, frustrated by his inability to see what is being hidden from him, leaves. Bird in the Window is the final chapter of an ideal trilogy started with Hen his Wife and Andrei Svislotski. What follows is an excerpt from an article by Christopher J. Robinson appeared on ASIFA but (at the moment) available only thru Google cache. "Like all of Kovalyov's work, Bird in The Window is extremely personal. The house is based on the home Kovalyov lived in with his third wife and daughter. The father / husband is a stranger in his own home and he sees that he no longer belongs there. He is as much a stranger as the Chinese borders. He did not understand the people he was supposed to love and protect. He does not understand himself. The child, who needs him most, is abandoned and left to die. By the time Bird in The Window was complete, Kovalyov left his wife." The movie won the Grand Prize at the Ottawa International Animation Festival in 1996. The author also won that prize in 1990 and 2005. Igor Kovalyov is an internationally acclaimed designer, animator and director. His award winning films include: Andrei Svislotski, Hen, His Wife, Bird In The Window, and Flying Nansen. Wow! Tanto simbolismo al lavoro. E io non sono granché coi simboli, ma ho davvero apprezzato ciò che ho visto e, spero, state per vedere anche voi. Un uomo torna a far visita a una donna che vive con un giardiniere, due cinesi ed un bambino. L'uomo, frustrato dalla sua incapacità di capire ciò che gli viene nascosto, va via. Bird in the Window è il capitolo finale di un'ideale trilogia iniziata con Hen his Wife ed Andrei Svislotski. Quanto segue è un estratti da un articolo di Christopher J. Robinson apparso su ASIFA ma (al momento) disponibile solo via cache di Google. "Come tutta l'opera di Kovalyov, Bird in The Window è estremamento personale. La casa si basa su quella in cui Kovalyov ha vissuto con la terza moglie e la figlia. Il padre / marito è straniero nella sua stessa casa e si accorge di non appartenervi più. NACHO VIGALONDO - 7:35 de la manana

A woman enters a bar… No, it’s not the typical joke: she just wants to have breakfast, like she’s used to do every morning. But something breaks in the daily routine. Oddly, no one talks. You can’t even hear a cellphone ring. And then this guy starts to sing a serenade. At 7:35 in the morning!!! Probably the weirdest musical not involving men in fishnet stockings you’ll ever see. This movie is a classic, for me at least, but it doesn't seem to be as well known as it deserves, so let's give it a little help. Directed by Nacho Vigalondo, who also plays the part of the singing guy, and wrote the words of the song, this short was nominated at the 2005 Academy Awards. P.S. Note that the clip on Blip TV has better video quality (has been ripped from satellite) but no subtitles!

Una donna entra in un bar... Non è la tipica barzelletta: vuole solo fare colazione, come fa d'altronde ogni mattina. Ma la routine quotidiana sta per subire un forte scossone. Stranamente, nessuno parla. Non si sente neanche un cellulare suonare. E poi questo tizio comincia a cantare una serenata. Alle 7 e 35 del mattino!!! Forse il musical più fuori di testa senza uomini in calze a rete che abbiate mai visto. Per me questo film è un classico, ma non sembra essere conosciuto quanto merita, quindi ho pensato di rimediare... Diretto da Nacho Vigalondo, che interpreta anche il tizio canterino, ed ha scritto le parole della canzone, il corto è stato nominato agli Oscar 2005. P.S. La clip su Blip TV ha qualità video superiore (è un registrazione da satellite) ma mancano i sottotitoli!

Sugar Baby Love

Protect yourself!

Follow up to Femme, the campaign that won the Cannes Lions last year, this time especially directed to the homosexual audience. We follow a boy that discovers his sexuality in a world (our world, if you have some doubt) where it's not easy to be "different". At least he have his rubber friend. The music is The Ronettes' Sugar Baby Love, from which I christened the spot that comes with no name... The director, Wilfrid Brimo, was featured on this blog not long ago, with his music video for Shakedown's Love Game. He's currently signed at Wanda Productions. Post production made at Mikros Image, the guys who brought us La chute de l'ange. Backgrounds drawn by Lâm Le Thanh: he also did the music video for New York, New York, previously posted.

Seguito di Femme, campagna vincitrice ai Cannes Lions lo scorso anno, stavolta direttamente rivolta al pubblico omosessuale. Seguiamo un ragazzo che scopre la sua sessualità in un mondo (il nostro, se avete qualche dubbio) in cui non è semplice essere "diversi". Ma almeno ha il suo amico di gomma... La musica è Sugar Baby Love di The Ronettes da cui ho battezzato lo spot che non sembra avere nome... Unofficial clip for Sleep Tonight by the Stars, song included in their album Set Yourself on Fire. Video directed and produced by Israeli artist Jonathan Vardi. Somewhat like Adam Bizanski (who's in the "Special thanks" section of the credits) did for The Shins' Pink Bullets.

Two roaches discuss about life and reincarnation. And, yea, you obviously know how that will end. Short animated movie made by Ole Bukowsky, Tim Reischmann and Max Koriath as a final project for their studies at The German Film School. P.S. You'll find three clips. An AVI (DivX) file in English with crappy video. A Quicktime one in German, with a suitable video. And finally, another AVI (XviD), made by me putting together the audio of the first and the video from the second. It's slightly out of sync, but you know, I'm human after all.

Due scarafaggi discutono della vita e della reincarnazione. E sì, potete già immaginare come andrà a finire... Cortometraggio animato di Ole Bukowsky, Tim Reischmann e Max Koriath, a conclusione dei loro studi presso The German Film School. P.S. Troverete tre clip. Un file AVI (DivX) in inglese con video pessimo. Un Quicktime in tedesco, con video accettabile. He'll buy a little girl that has been labelled by mistake. Uhm, yes, so they're six. You're a smart guy! P.S. The movie is in French with no subtitles, but they are not really needed to enjoy the show. So, sit back and relax!

Pasqua è finalmente passata, quindi questo film natalizio capita a fagiuolo. Beh, non è che parli del Natale: è solo ambientato in quel periodo dell'anno. Oh, sì, già... Il consumismo, sì... Warning: very weird stuff!!! I remember seeing this a long time ago, but I forgot where... "One day, Sayuri's family tells her it is time for her to go on strike." Yeah. Well, whatever, I don't think you really need a summary for this short. But if you're able to make a suitable one, I'd love to hear... Everything in the film, including direction, animation, design and music was done by one person—Takashi Kimura. (Source: Cartoon Brew) Born in Osaka, Japan, in 1967, he graduated from Musashino Art University in Tokyo. In 1999 he began studying 3D CG-animation at Digital Hollywood in Tokyo. (Source: AWN)

Attenzione: roba fuori di melone!!! Ricordo di averlo visto tanto tempo fa, ma ho dimenticato dove... "Un giorno, la famiglia di Sayuri decide che è arrivato, per lei, il giorno di colpire." Vabbe'. Non penso ci sia bisogno della trama per questo corto. Ma se riuscite a trovarne una adatta, mi piacerebbe sentirla... Tutto nel film, inclusa regia, animazione, design e musiche, è stato realizzato da una sola persona — Takashi Kimura. Tropty 2: La cueillette

Some nice animation here, along with a good timing and a dynamic editing though the scene remain completely static all along the movie. Tropty is a "civilised" panda bear that experiences some huge problems trying to reach high places. In this episode, he'll try to pick an apple up from a tree. La cueillette is the follow up to the Tropty, the original short movie by Jean-philippe Vasseur, Thomas Vilport and Jerome Charton. A third episode in coming out soon. UPDATE: don't know why, but here's a completely different version of the short.

Il menu di oggi: animazione gradevole, buoni tempi comici ed un montaggio dinamico nonostante la scena resti statica per tutta la durata nel film. La cueillette è il seguito a Tropty, il corto originale creato da Jean-philippe Vasseur, Thomas Vilport e Jerome Charton. Un terzo episodio è previsto a breve. UPDATE: non so perché, ma qui c'è una versione completamente diversa del corto.

KOOP - Baby

As stated on antville this deserved to be posted, even though it's not the latest video out there. Koop is a Swedish music band, and constists of Magnus Zingmark and Oscar Simonsson, producers and jazz musicians. Baby can be found on the album Waltz for Koop, released on 2002 and features the voice of Cecilia Stalin. The video has been directed by Swedish director Magnus Östergren, also known as Potemkin.

Come riportato su antville, questo video merita un post, anche se non è l'ultima novità in uscita. Koop è una band svedese, formata da Magnus Zingmark e Oscar Simonsson, produttori e musicisti jazz. Baby è inclusa sull'album Waltz for Koop, uscito nel 2002, e la parte vocale è cantata da Cecilia Stalin. Il video è stato diretto dal regista svedese Magnus Östergren, anche noto come Potemkin.

Gertie Gutless

A nice short animated movie about Gertie, a little girl living in a dark world. She finds refuge in a swingset on the hill... This movie is the work of three students of Digipen Institute of Technology: Kevin Dart (his last work is on the character s of Evil Dead: Regeneration), Chris Turnham (currently working for ArenaNet) and Bryan Koszoru. The style is very close to Tim Burton (ever seen Vincent? You should... Really!) and Henry Selick, and the music by Jeff Tymoschuk (of Greenwire Music) similarly owe something to Danny Elfman. Tnx to Drawn! that posted an article about two of the directors.

Bel corto animato. Parla di Gertie, una ragazzina che vive in un mondo di tenebra, da cui trova rifugio in un'altalena sulla collina... Il film è opera di tre studenti del Digipen Institute of Technology: Kevin Dart (il suo ultimo lavoro ha riguardato i personaggi di Evil Dead: Regeneration), Chris Turnham (che attualmente lavora per ArenaNet) e Bryan Koszoru. Lo stile è molto vicino a Tim Burton (mai visto Vincent? Dovreste... Davvero!) ed Henry Selick, e la musica di Jeff Tymoschuk (di Greenwire Music) similmente deve qualcosa a Danny Elfman. Then, one them is betrayed by the others. But revenge is on her hands... Lark is a South African trio that has been making music since April 2004 and have been described as “new age trip hop” and “Alternative electro”; the members are Paul Ressel AKA Humaniser (electronic instrumentation and production), Inge Beckman (vocals) and Simon "Fuzzy" Ratcliffe (bass). (Source: Lark & Emusic) Moonlight is their first music video; the song is included on their debut EP, called Mouth of me and published by African Dope. The video has been created and directed by Greg Rom of the production house Humanoid. Post production, including all the visual effects, has been done at Ontwerp.

A badger just wants that the world lets him sleep. But superior (fire)powers will make his rest distressing. Animated short movie directed by Sharon Colman and animated by herself, with Ant Blades and Richard Jones. The music is by Peter Gosling. Badgered features the voice talent of Rupert Degas, and gained a nomination to the 2006 Academy Awards as Best Animated Short Film. Sharon Colman, from Scotland, graduated from Glasgow School of Art with a BA Illustration in 2000 and worked as a Flash animator, freelance illustrator and as an inbetweener for director Matthew Hood at the National Film and Television School. Sharon graduated from the NFTS in 2005 with Badgered. She's currently represented by Tandem Films. The film that should've made Richard Seed famous, if he wasn't such a quack!

This animated short "consists of hand drawn ink artwork completed over a span of nearly four years. Describing the convergence of man and technology, it is a surreal look at a mechanical world where human eggs are genetically reprogrammed by ominous machines." (Source: The Animation Show) The director says: "Work began on this film as a commentary on the 1997 cloning of Dolly the sheep. The goal was to visualize a hybrid world where the distinction between organic machines (such as cells) and their man-made counterparts (such as microchips) becomes unclear." (Source: Canopus) The film, that is included in the DVD version of The Animation Show, opens with the mission statement of scientist and entrepreneur Richard Seed. Born in Dunoon, Scotland, in 1973 Jeremy Solterbeck spent his childhood in Alaska. He work as a director at Canopus Prohects. Oh, by the way... Jeremy sees music videos as "a great way to practice storytelling; short enough to be feasible but long enough to let something develop and resolve; there is room to experiment and be indulgent". AARON RUELL - Everything`s Gone Green

A man (played by Hamish Linklater) who has not left the building he works and lives in for 14 years, meets a receptionist (Alexandra Holden) eager to understand more about his mysterious life. (Source: IMDB) Short (well, it's 18 minutes!) movie directed by Aaron Ruell, probably more known for his role as Kip in Napoleon Dynamite. For that movie, he also directed the title sequence. He's currenty signed at Über as a commercial director. The movie was selected for the 2005 Sundance Film Festival along with another movie by Ruell, Mary.

Louis Clichy is a former student of Gobelins, where he graduated with the short movie Juranessic in 2002.

Altro classico ben noto, a volte sotto il nome di Akoacacere, ora in una versione con qualità video accettabile. Storia di un ragazzo e una ragazza che si innamorano. Nient'altro da dire. L`eveil

A young man awakes in an unknown place. The environment, and then its own body, starts to deform in a very bad way... The short movie is the graduation project of Xavier Etchepare and Franklin Toussaint, two students of Lisaa, L’Institut Supérieur des Arts Appliqués. The making of for this movie won the Festival du making of at Romorantin in 2005. The featurette will let you appreciate all the different techniques (claymation, real action, and more...) used as layers for the final animation. P.S. Franklin Toussaint website holds the movie and the making of as a single clip. You can get them separately on LISAA website, but with lower video quality.

Un giovane si sveglia in un luogo sconosciuto. L'ambiente, e poi il suo stesso corpo, iniziano a deformarsi in maniera preoccupante... Éclats de suie (Soot glares) is a funny and enjoyable animation, based on the song My Beloved Monster by The Eels. The short movie (or unofficial music promo, if you prefer) is the work of Yves Geleyn and Julien Genoulaz, members of Q & Chemise, a collective of French directors currently signed to La Base Films. UPDATE (07/2007): To make the round of film festivals, the movie has been re-edited to an alternate soundtrack by Mark Webster.

Éclats de suie (macchie di fuliggine) è una divertente e gradevole animazione, basata su My Beloved Monster dei The Eels. Il corto (o se preferite, il video non ufficiale) è opera di Yves Geleyn e di Julien Genoulaz, due membri di Q & Chemise, un collettivo di registi francesi che attualmente fanno capo a La Base Films. RUAIRI ROBINSON - Fifty Percent Grey

Congratulations, you are dead!

Well, this is a classic, but being one of the short that pushed me on the downward spiral of short movie addiction, I feel like it can't be missed up there. The story revolves around a dead soldier who awakens in a grey environment, totally empty except for a TV set. This movie by Ruairí Robinson granted him a nomination ad Best Short Animated Movie to the 2002 Academy Awards. The author says: "It's nice to be able to make a movie that has a really unhappy ending, and yet people still seem to enjoy it." The source is The Animation Show website; you can find Fifty Percent Grey, along with some other amazing animation, on the classic 2003 DVD by Mike Judge and Don Hertzfeld.

Beh, questo è un classico, ma essendo uno dei film che mi ha portato nel tunnel senza uscita della dipendenza da corti, sento che non può mancare un post apposta. La storia è quella di un soldato morto che si sveglia in un posto grigio, completamente spoglio, a parte un televisore. Il cortometraggio di Ruairí Robinson si è guadagnato una nomination come miglior corto animato agli Oscar del 2002. Dice l'autore: "E' bello poter fare un film in cui il finale non è affatto lieto, e nonostante ciò la gente continua ad apprezzarlo." Apple on a Tree

I miss my life as an apple.

Everything you'll see on this clip is done putting together people... Words can't explain so I put up a set of stills instead of the usual big snapshot. Before you watch the clip, notice that the music is as trippy as the video. That is, it's great if you're on acid. Otherwise it sucks. Refer to this clip from Family Guy for a detailed explanation. So. The guy who made the music is named Phoenix the Devourer (yeah, I know...) and Apple on a Tree is featured... uhm... on his website. Animation has been developed and directed by Astrid Rieger and Zeljko Vidovic. Astrid Rieger, born in Romania, moved to Germany when 11 years old, and studied visual communication. The clip features additional animation by Stefan Ringelschwandtner, whose website links to us. Yikes! :) P.S. The 4 minute clip lacks of the opening and closing credits. The video quality is almost the same.

Tutto ciò che vedrete in questo video è ottenuto componendo persone... Difficile spiegare a parole, per cui ho messo un po' di frame al posto del solito scatto singolo. Prima della visione, notate che la musica è fuori di testa quanto il video. Ossia: è grandiosa se state strafatti. Altrimenti fa schifo. KOSAI SEKINE - Right Place

There are two colors in my head...

The sad story of a little eccentric man (actually he's a control freak!) who's in search for his place in the world. The director, Kosaï Sekine, graduated in philosophy at the Sophia University in Tokyo. The same year, 2000, he signed to Hat Co. Ltd. to become a director. In 2005, Right Place was selected for the short film showcase on the theme Fear No Change, that was held at the Asia-Pacific Advertising Festival and was reported by shots as the film most highly praised from the audience at the venue. That's serendipity. I was looking for a completely different kind of Eva (no, not that!) and I found this interesting short, done in tradional animation and Flash. It's a short film commisioned by Hibiscus Female Prisoners' Welfare Project, and "aimed at dissuading women in Carribbean countries who might engage in drug trafficking". [Source: Cartoon Brew] Based on an original story by Tass Darlington, the movie "shows how Eva, a young Jamaican, is drawn into hard drugs trafficking, with tragic consequences for herself and her family." Serendipitevolezza! Facevo una ricerca su tutt'altro tipo di Eva (no, non questa!) ed ho trovato questo interessante corto realizzato in animazione tradizionale e Flash. Si tratta di un corto commissionato dalla Hibiscus Female Prisoners' Welfare Project, e "teso a dissuadere le done nei paesi caraibici dal finire coinvolte nel traffico di droga." Well, it seems that I'm cleaning my "clip to post" heap. Last week I found a non-flash clip for the Buckethead song I just posted. And now, here's a clip for Women in Japan, that is on queue from six months, when the album and the video was released. Thanks to Hemaworstje! It's an animation set on a surreal scenery, that "follows the journey of a strange-looking man across the ocean to a far away land and back again." It doesn't seem to have a strong storyline, but following the lyrics, we'll find the man who kissed all the women in Japan... The Ralfe Band is Oly Ralfe and Andrew Mitchell. They mix the offbeat, evocative song-writing of Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, and Calexico with film scores and traditional European folk. [Source: Fact Magazine] Women of Japan is featured on Swords, their debut album released on October 2005 for Skint Records. It will also be released as a single on 24 April 2006. The clip, that recently won the Best Music Video award at the SWSX Festival in Austin, has been realized by Nigel Coan and Ivana Zorn, currently signed (as Coan & Zorn) at Not To Scale. The music video is based on drawings by Oly Ralfe and Ivana Zorn. Beware, Beware, God Sees.

Music, animation and painting meet together to give birth to this little masterpiece, inspired to the work of Dutch artist Hieronymus Bosch. Buckethead is the stage name of Brian Carroll, guitarist and composer who has recorded several solo albums, as well as collaborative albums with the Praxis band, or as a guitarist for other groups. The song is included in his album The Cuckoo Clocks of Hell, released on April 2004 for Disembodied Records. The video is brought you by Syd & Eric, that is Syd Garon and Eric Henry. They joined in 1998, directing and animating Wave Twisters, a 50 minute movie based on the album of the same name by DJ Q-Bert.

Musica, animazione e pittura si incontrano per dar vita a questo piccolo capolavoro ispirato all'opera dell'artista olandese Hieronymus Bosch. Buckethead è il nome d'arte di Brian Carroll, chitarrista e compositore, autore di diversi album da solista, così come di album come membro della band Praxis, e come chitarrista per altri gruppi. Animated short created by Gareth Lockett (member of Raging Pixel Productions) and Kerry-Jean Watson. It placed third in the People Choice Award at the 19th WA Screen Awards.

Inseguendo una coloratissima farfalla, un coniglio si ritrova per una selva oscura. In questo modo, il coniglio scoprirà da dove escono le farfalle... MICHAEL DUDOK DE WIT - Le moine et le poisson

An exuberant monk is obsessed by a little fish that he's not able to pick up. He'll try with any means, day and night, but the fish will elude all his attempts, until the monk go nuts! Oh, and watch out for that bucket!!! Le moine et le poisson (The Monk and the Fish) is a superb short movie, directed and animated by Michael Dudok de Wit, that won the Cartoon d'or and was nominated for the Oscar in 1994. Michael won the Oscar in 2000 for his amazing Father and Daughter. Michael Dudok de Wit was born in Holland. In 1978 he graduated from the West Surrey College of Art in England, with his first film The Interview. After working for a year in Barcelona, he settled in London where he directed and animated many award-winning commercials for television and cinema. In 1992, he created his short film Tom Sweep. Un esuberante monaco è ossessionato da un piccolo pesce che non riesce ad acchiappare. Ci prova in tutti i modi, notte e giorno, ma il pesce elude ogni tentativo, finché il monaco dà fuori di testa. E attento a quel secchio!!! Le moine et le poisson (Il monaco e il pesce) è un superbo cortometraggio, diretto ed animato da Michael Dudok de Wit, vincitore del Cartoon d'or e nominato all'Oscar nel 1994. Michael ha poi vinto l'Oscar nel 2000 con il bellissimo Father and Daughter. Michael Dudok de Wit nasce in Olanda. Nel 1978 si laurea presso il West Surrey College of Art in Inghilterra, col suo primo film The Interview. Dopo aver lavorato per un anno a Barcellona, si stabilisce a Londra dove dirige molti spot per cinema e TV che gli valgono diversi premi. Nel 1992, crea il suo cortometraggio Tom Sweep. JAMIE THRAVES - Negative

A foreword: this clip seems to have something to do with the song with same name by the Mansun, featured on their album Ten. Since the music is by Bernard Herrmann, probably from a Hitchcock movie, from Vertigo, and there's no direct reference to the band nor their music (thanks god!), I'll file it under Short Movies. UPDATE. A reader wrote in: "The visuals of this short film were originally used in a music video for the British band Mansun. But, while editing the video, Thraves was also listening to the Vertigo soundtrack and felt that the music worked well with his visuals. He put them together and wound up with Negative." The movie is about a couple of lovers that is unsuspectingly under the close (literally!) attentions of a voyeur. Stylish, surreal, the short stay on the thin line between parody and hommage. And dances tip tap on it. The movie, produced by Oil Factory, has been written and directed by Jamie Thraves, currently signed to Oil Factory and Factory Films. Jamie Thraves began his career in directing in the early nineties. He graduated from Hull Polytechnic in 1991. He then went on to further education at The Royal College of Art, where he received his Master of Arts in Film and Television, specializing in directing. Premessa: questa clip sembra avere a che fare con la canzone omonima dei Mansun, inclusa nel loro album Ten. Giacché la musica è di Bernard Herrmann, probabilmente da qualche film di Hitchcock, da Vertigo, e non c'è altro riferimento diretto alla band né alla loro musica (grazie a dio!), questo lo archivio sotto Cortometraggi. UPDATE. Ci scrive un lettore: "le immagini del corto sono state in principio usate per un video della band britannica Mansun. Ma durante il montaggio, Thraves stava anche ascoltando la colonna sonora di Vertigo e si è accorto che la musica funzionava bene con le immagini. Le ha messe insieme e ne è nato Negative." Il film è centrato su una coppia di amanti che non si accorge di essere sotto l'attenzione ravvicinata (!!!) di un guardone. Stiloso, surreale, il corto sta sulla linea sottile fra parodia ed omaggio. E ci balla sopra il tip tap. Il film, prodotto da Oil Factory, è stato scritto e diretto da Jamie Thraves, attualmente di casa presso Oil Factory e Factory Films. Jamie Thraves inizia la sua carriera di regista nei primi anni 90. Si laurea allo Hull Polytechnic nel 1991. Prosegue gli studi presso The Royal College of Art, dove consegue il Master of Arts in Film and Television, specializzandosi nella regia. ORI BEN-SHABAT - Piece of Mind

This is the VFX reel of Ori Ben-Shabat, a student of the Vancouver Film School. But far from being a series of shots to show the world the last features of the 3D image processing softwares, Piece of Mind focuses on a concept, and a good one, and develops it thru its length. So, let's call it a short movie. It ends with the mandatory break down (a brief show case of the layers that compose the overall image, sort of a making of) that is inspired to this video of an experimental device that showed around some time ago.

Il VFX reel di Ori Ben-Shabat, uno studente della Vancouver Film School. Ma lontano dall'essere una serie di riprese che mostrano le caratteristiche degli ultimi software per elaborazione 3D, Piece of Mind si basa su un concetto, anche buono, e lo sviluppa lungo la sua durata. Insomma, è un corto! Finisce con l'obbligatorio break down (una sequenza che mostra gli strati che compongono l'immagine complessiva) che è ispirato a questo video di un dispositivo sperimentale che è girato negli ultimi tempi.

A nice clip, directed by Rudolphe Pauly, where a mad scientist (H) and his assistant (M), both very keen on old western movies, drink a potion that takes them in the far west. Or in an old movie... Arthur Higelin, better known under his screen name Arthur H, is a French pianist and singer, born in 1966. He is the son of the French singer Jacques Higelin. (Source: Wikipedia) The song is included in his album Adieu tristesse, released on September 2005. M is Mathieu Chedid, indie pop artist of Lebanese origin, and son of the French singer Louis Chedid. He has been here previously with the video for La bonne étoile. The two men that appear at the end of the video are actually Louis Chedid and Jacques Higelin, the fathers of the two singers. POETS OF THE FALL - Carnival of Rust

Well, so here's the deal. I'll post this clip, and you don't say it sucks... :) It's a video about "bittersweet mood, tarot cards, and rust", with some pretty visuals. The overall result is not as good as it could have been, but I like it. So you get it. Poets of the Fall is an independent rock band from Finland. The members are Mark (vocals), Ollie (guitar), and Captain (producer/keyboard). One of their song, Late Goodbye, were featured in the soundtrack of Max Payne 2. EMILIE SIMON - Fleur de Saison

The past collaboration of No Brain and Émilie Simon gave us Flowers, a lovely animated video. Now they delivered a completely different kind of clip, not really original, but kind of good. The singer is depicted as a flower of the season (that's the meaning of the title), completely wrapped in the nature that surrounds her. As the seasons pass, shapes and colors change. Émilie Simon is a French singer of electronic music. She wrote the score for La Marche de l'empereur, though it has not been used in the English language version of the movie. It is in the Italian one. The song is included in her second album, Végétal, released in March 2006. No Brain is a collective of four French directors. They are actually signed at Cosa Productions, that produced this video, and Pusher Media.

La precedente collaborazione di No Brain ed Émilie Simon ci diede Flowers, un video animato davvero carino. Adesso invece ci propongono un video diverso, non molto originale, ma ben fatto. La cantante è raffigurata come un fiore di stagione (questo il significato del titolo), completamente parte della natura che la circonda. Al passare delle stagioni, forme e colori cambiano... Émilie Simon è una cantante francese di musica elettronica. Ha scritto la partitura di La Marche de l'empereur, che però non è stata usata nella versione in lingua inglese del film. In quella italiana, sì. La canzone è inclusa nel suo secondo album, Végétal, uscito nel marzo 2006. No Brain è un collettivo di quattro registi francesi. Night. The room of a castle. A mysterious person is awake, waiting for a man to visit her. Little time after their passionate love, the visitor is wildly assassinated by the strange woman. Strange looking and nonetheless fascinating short movie, produced by Lardux Films and directed by Alexandre Dubosc, another fellow came out from Supinfocom. He realized the film in 3D, with the usual techniques, then developed some tools to process the rendered bisimensional images and make them look... warmer. WARNING: the video is stored with an ordinary 4:3 ratio but, when opened in Quicktime player it's readdressed to the correct 1.85:1 aspect ratio. Using different players may have unpredictable effects!

Benjamin also won several awards with the final project he worked at the Savannah College, The Potter, directed by Josh Burton. And his first professional short film, One Rat Short, won the Siggraph 2006 ad Best of Show.

WOLF PARADE - Modern World

I'm not in love with the modern world.

A short story of progress and unemployment. The new music video by Adam Bizanski uses stop animation to deploy the same theme as the song without staying too close to the lyrics, but also without undermining the spirit of the song. Wolf Parade is a new formed band from Canada, whose members are Dan Boeckner, Spencer Krug, Hadji Bakara and Arlen Thompson. Modern World is featured on their first album, Apologies to the Queen Mary, released for Subpop on September 2005. Adam Bizanski, from Israel, has been previously here with his one man effort for The Shins' Pink Bullets. UPDATE: Adam posted a torrent pointing to an higher resolution of the clip. I also posted a compressed version on Greatest Journal. (That is now hosted on Adam's website too.) RE-UPDATE: the clip just won Best Animated Video at the 2006 antville Music Video Award, so here's a director's commentary to the making of it.

DAESUP CHANG - Painting Day

The fairground is closed as the attractions needs a bit of maintenance. A man is painting the bull riding machine, while some unfortunate events give him a free ride. The movie is the graduation project of Daesup Chang at the SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) and screened on various festivals, winning several awards, including the Best Animation at the Reno Film Festival 2005. Not a masterpiece, indeed, but it's funny!

La fiera è chiusa, le attrazioni hanno bisogno di manutenzione. Un uomo sta dipingendo il toro da rodeo, quando una serie di eventi sfortunati gli regala un giro gratis. Il film è il progetto di laurea di Daesup Chang presso lo SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) ed è apparso in diversi festival, vincendo vari premi, fra cui quello per la miglior animazione al Reno Film Festival 2005. Non un capolavoro, d'accordo, ma è divertente!

I was watching the commercials by Marc Craste (the director of Will the Summer Make Good for All Our Sins and Jojo in the Stars, remember?) I downloaded from Studio AKA, to decide which one was worth more to be posted. Hard choice. Then I spotted this new one on Cartoon Brew... The jingle is A Smile and A Ribbon (1956) by Patience and Prudence.

A couple wishes to became parents, using a new technology that allows them to choose the spare parts of their new born, one by one. Philippe Grammaticopoulos vive e lavora in Francia; è specializzato, oltre che nel 3D, anche nella grafica e nell'illustrazione e ha realizzato alcune opere a fumetti pubblicate dai più importanti editori francesi. (Fonte: Animo Web) Le régulateur has been realized with the financial backing of the French National Film Institute (Centre nationale de la cinématographie), the Thecif, and ARTE. (Source: Brooklin Int'l Film Festival) This is his second movie, following Le Processus, his graduation work at Supinfocom in 2001.

Una coppia, per soddisfare il desiderio di un figlio, si rivolge a una tecnologia che permette loro di costruire pezzo per pezzo il loro bambino. Some Updates

The Cat with Hands: fixed the link to the Windows Media stream. The McPassion: all the copy of the movie not hosted on the official site have been removed. And that last copy will die on Easter friday. That's the will of the author. I don't agree with, but I respect it, and the post has now no download available, linking only to McPassion website. At a Glance: I made some mistakes in the description, attributing autorship to the wrong persons. One of the author of this music video, Eugene, wrote me with the right informations, which I submitted. I also added three sections in the sidebar: PLAYER points to what I feel is the best choice to enjoy all the contents posted here, without bothering with codecs: Videolan. It doesn't work always (in fact I use MPC as my first choice) but, hey, pobody's nerfect! (Source: CG Society) Amazing short animation by The Blackheart Gang, the collaborative effort of Ree Treweek and Marcus Wormstorm (who also worked at the music). Did I say this is amazing? Love is a game
that drives me insane

Love is a game, and this video cuts directly to the heart of the matter, using graphics in the style of Eboy and The Sims, but taking the "game" to the next level with some hot pixelized action. (Source: RESFEST) Shakedown is a swiss duo, formed in 2000 by two brothers, Mandrax (real name Stephan Kohler) and Seb K (Seb Kohler), that previously worked for years separately. Love Game was released by Kitsune Music in 2003, as a single and previously included on the compilation Kitsune Love, and is featured on their latest album, Spellbound. The video is directed by Wilfred Brimo who is currently signed at Wanda Productions. P.S. Sorry. No file with a decent quality. The quicktime one it's something I made with the flash video from YouTube, so figure out how crappy it looks... Fixed!

In this animated short movie, a hungry gopher hatches a clever plan to get a quick snack, but discovers that even the best laid plans can go utterly awry. He quicly learns that, no matter how hungry he may be, there is no free lunch. Written and directed by Jeff Fowler, produced at Blur Studio, the short has been nominated at Academy Awards 2004 for Best Animated Short Movie. It also won the Kids Competion at the Ottawa International Animation Festival 2005. And it screened online at Sundance Film Festival 2006. Jeff Fowler graduated at Ringling School of Art and Design in 2002 with the short movie Monkey Pit that you may also have a good time watching. Since then, he works for Blur Studio.

In questo corto animato, un roditore affamato escogita un piano astuto per uno spuntino veloce, ma scopre che anche il piano meglio congegnato può andare a rotoli. In breve impara che, per quanto affamato possa essere, non ci sono pasti gratis. Scritto e diretto da Jeff Fowler, prodotto da Blur Studio, il corto è stato nominato all' Oscar nel 2004 come Miglior Film Corto d'Animazione. Ha anche vinto la Kids Competion allo Ottawa International Animation Festival 2005. Inoltre, è stato programmato online al Sundance Film Festival 2006. JASON DAVIES - The Machine

Look! He's walking!

Baazle is an inventor who is devising a machine to create moving images. But Dinsdale is just a bit skeptic on the... whatever is friend is doing! The Machine is an animated movie created and directed by Jason Davies, Graduate Student of Animation and Visual Effects from the SCAD, Savannah College of Art and Design. The animation is the work of a team that includes Jason Davies itself and Ryan Yokley, who also worked on Hellp! Ryan Heniser did the rendering. This short celebrates animation itself and the machines and technology used to produce animation. It is the dream of all animators that everyone will "want to watch little moving pictures dancing on the walls"! (Source: Joe Pasquale, professor at SCAD) The Machine won honorable mention at SIGGRAPH 2004's SPACE competition (for student movies) and is featured on SCAD's show reel for 2003-2004. (Source: Line of Action) The featured score is Thesis (Simphony n.15) by Henry Cowell. P.S. The two DivX versions have same audio and video, but the original one is not correctly interleaved. New York, New York

In the city that doesn't sleep...

A blend of techniques makes this clip slightly different from the stuff you usally see around. Music video for a remixed version by Marc Minelli of the classic New York, New York by John Kander and Fred Ebb. The video, produced by Cube Creative Computer Company, is directed by Cedric Ih, a former student of EESA who graduated with the short movie Top Bird. Animation and drawings are the work of Lâm Le Thanh and Adrien Barbier-Lambert, both students of EESA, who did together the short movie Vampz.

La miscela di tecniche diverse rende questo video lievemente diverso dalla roba che si vede di solito. Video per una versione remixata da Marc Minelli del classico New York, New York di John Kander e Fred Ebb. Hellp!

Short animation that chronicles the mishaps that insue when the devil tries to install a ceiling fan in his hotter than hell apartment. Hellp! is the culmination of Project: Backpocket. The 10 week program teamed some students together, under the supervision of Mark Gustafson, a top director and producer from Vinton Studios (now Laika Entertainment) to create an animated short from start to finish. (Source: Line of Action) The guys who took part to the project are eight. Three students are from Savannah College of Art and Design: Kishore Vijay (storyboard, texture painting, character development and character animation), Sean Danyi and Ryan Yokley. Two students from School of Visual Arts: Jessica Vliet (modeling and animation) and Andrea Shear (co-director as well as helping with modeling, lighting and texturing). Three students from California Institute of Arts: Jesus Chambrot (co-director), Josh Parpan (who did the amazing intro sequence but also served as production designer) and Benjamin Vu. Corto animato che narra le vicissitudini che occorrono al diavolo quando cerca di montare un ventilatore da soffitto nel suo appartamento. Hellp! è il culmine di Project: Backpocket. Fairy Berry

"A film full of poetry, and half naked gals!" (from a comment in the guestbook) It's summer, in a peaceful forest. A yellow fairy and a red fairy come to a dispute. They battle to impose their respective color. As a result, all the forest become orange. It's autumn. Short animated movie made by four student of the French school EESA: Hung Yu Ho AKA Polo, Virginie Giroux, Yacine Sefsaf AKA Sonia and Thomas Guittonneau. Music and sounds by Olivier Michelot. Voices are by Caroline Chevallereau and by Florian Landouzy, who is another EESA student, author of Super Moine, another short movie featured here. I especially liked how they managed to avoid that polygonal look that you can usually see on those kind of movies (sometimes it seems like an extremely overworked 2D animation.) That, and the half naked gals!!!

"Un film pieno di poesia, e di tipe seminude!" (da un commento nel guestbook) E' estate, in una pacifica foresta. Una fatina gialla e una fatina rossa litigano. Combattono per imporre ognuna il proprio colore. Alla fine, la foresta si tinge d'arancio. E' autunno. Corto animato realizzato da quattro studenti della scuola francese EESA: Hung Yu Ho alias Polo, Virginie Giroux, Yacine Sefsaf alias Sonia e Thomas Guittonneau. Musiche e suoni di Olivier Michelot. Le voci sono di Caroline Chevallereau e di Florian Landouzy, anche lui studente EESA, ed autore di Super Moine, un altro corto animato passato su questo blog. Ho gradito soprattutto come sono riusciti ad evitare il look poligonale che in genere si nota in questo tipo di film (a volte sembra un film animato in 2D estremamente raffinato.) Quello, e le ragazze seminude!!!

CECILIA ARANOVICH - To a Man with a Big Nose

Erase el espolón de una galera.

The struggle of a man who wants to get rid of his big nose. A visual adaptation by of the sonnet with the same name by Spanish author Francisco de Quevedo. Written and directed by Cecilia Aranovich, a student of the Academy of Entertainment and Technology at the Santa Monica College, the movie features the voice talent of David Hunt, and the music by Victor Alexeeff. It reminds me of Atama-Yama by the Japanese artist Koji Yamamura. You can find that short on The Animation Show DVD. To a Man with a Big Nose has been nominated for the Student Academy Awards 2005 in the Animation category, and a finalist at the Global Student Animation Awards, won by Conehead. Clara Aranovich has been making films with her brother since she was a little girl. A creator of over 20 short films, Aranovich believes the key to good movie-making is editing closely to music and leaving out dialogue. Gli sforzi di un uomo che vuole sbarazzarsi del suo nasone. Adattamento visivo del sonetto omonimo dell'autore spagnolo Francisco de Quevedo. Scritto e diretto da Cecilia Aranovich, studente presso la Academy of Entertainment and Technology del Santa Monica College, il film si avvale della narrazione di David Hunt, e delle musiche di Victor Alexeeff. Mi ha ricordato Atama-Yama dell'artista giapponese Koji Yamamura, corto animato che trovate sul DVD The Animation Show. To a Man with a Big Nose e' stato nominato agli Student Academy Awards 2005 nella cetegoria Animazione, oltre che finalista al Global Student Animation Awards, vinto da Conehead. Clara Aranovich ha realizzato film con suo fratello fin da quando era piccola. Autrice di più di 20 cortometraggi, Aranovich pensa che la chiave per la buona riuscita del film è un montaggio orientato alla musica, che lasci fuori i dialoghi. OHGR - Majik

Some industrial music, a metaphoric (but not that much) description of the socio-political situation, and stop-motion animation. What could you ask more? Ohgr is the solo project of Nivek Ogre (real name Kevin Graham Ogilvie) also singer for the Skinny Puppy. The song is featured on the album Sunnypsyop, released on 2003 for Spitfire Records. The enhanced version of the CD includes the promo itself. The video has been directed and animated by Bill Morrison (for Process Productions) together with Thomas Kuntz, who also did the models and the characters. As a jeopardy: the working title for the animation was Hylic Manoever. Whatever it means.

La versione "avanzata" del CD include il promo stesso. DON PAN - Conehead

Slow! Mind that child!

It's been a very hot day. That's why Conehead, our hero, is chasing a runaway ice-cream van. Or maybe not? Conehead it the final graduation project of Dan Pan, a student of the Bournemouth University's NCCA. "The main idea was to get a very staged look to the environment with different layers and a lot of things moving at once, and to create depth and texturing with different shapes. I was aiming for an almost toy box feel to it. Influences for this piece include, Studio AKA, Aardman Animation, Partizan and Georges Méliès’ A Trip to the Moon." (For the Partizan sake, just check out the It's not the end of the world music video.) The short won the Global Student Animation Awards 2005 and the Best Graduate Film award at the KAFI Animation Festival 2005.

E' stato un giorno caldissimo. Perciò Testa di Cono, il nostro eroe, sta inseguendo quel furgoncino dei gelati. O forse no? Conehead è il progetto finale di laurea di Dan Pan, uno studente del NCCA presso la Bournemouth University . "L'idea principale era di dare all'ambiente un aspetto scenografico, stratificato, con diversi oggetti in movimento contemporaneo, e creare profondità e varietà usando forme diverse. Un look quasi da miniatura. Hanno influenzato questo pezzo: Studio AKA, Aardman Animation, Partizan, e Viaggio nella luna di Georges Méliès." (Per quanto concerne Partizan, date uno sguardo al video di It's not the end of the world.) Il corto ha vinto il Global Student Animation Awards 2005 ed il premio come Best Graduate Film al KAFI Animation Festival 2005.
