KEN LIDSTER – Balloon

A young lovely girl is playing with a red balloon. But a mischievous shadow will took the rubber toy from her with deceit. So, the girl will try to rescue her balloon.

A story about innocence stolen and rescued. The movie mixes claymation and drawn animation, not exactly seamlessly, but in a creative and effective way.

Balloon is Ken Lidster’s graduation film from the National Film and Television School. It won the BAFTA award as Best Animated Short Film in 1991.

Ken Lidster was born in Canada and attended the Emily Carr College in Vancouver where he studied animation. He then worked in Toronto animating commercials in plasticine and filming the animation slots for Sesame Street.

After coming to England and graduating, Ken formed the company Loose Moose with Glenn Holberton, where he has directed many commercials and develops short movies.

NOTE: I did the XviD version (in a very complicate way) from the Flash file on Loose Moose. So, the flash one has better quality. But, on my PC, the video stops after 10 minutes while the audio continues. So, be advised and, at least, use the copy on Daily Motion.

I remember watching this as a small child ( my dad was a producer for the Irn Bru ads ) and it honestly scared the hell out of me…

    extraordinary animation though.

I remember seeing this as a child when it was first aired. I remember the story in almost its entirely – everything except the title and creator! A few searches for Ken Lidster’s ‘Balloon’ brought me to this site. Thank you so much to No Fat Clips for providing this video on-line to watch again.
