DON PAN – Conehead

Slow! Mind that child!

DON PAN: Conehead - MPEG-4 clip
It’s been a very hot day. That’s why Conehead, our hero, is chasing a runaway ice-cream van. Or maybe not?

Conehead it the final graduation project of Dan Pan, a student of the Bournemouth University’s NCCA.

“The main idea was to get a very staged look to the environment with different layers and a lot of things moving at once, and to create depth and texturing with different shapes. I was aiming for an almost toy box feel to it. Influences for this piece include, Studio AKA, Aardman Animation, Partizan and Georges MélièsA Trip to the Moon.” (For the Partizan sake, just check out the It’s not the end of the world music video.)

The short won the Global Student Animation Awards 2005 and the Best Graduate Film award at the KAFI Animation Festival 2005.

E’ stato un giorno caldissimo. Perciò Testa di Cono, il nostro eroe, sta inseguendo quel furgoncino dei gelati. O forse no?

(Per quanto concerne Partizan, date uno sguardo al video di It’s not the end of the world.)

Il corto ha vinto il Global Student Animation Awards 2005 ed il premio come Best Graduate Film al KAFI Animation Festival 2005.

I’m in love with the light and textures of this short: that sun, that clouds, the musical notes! delicious! *but*: I can’t fit there our little hero, its design looks quite out of place for me. And there’s also a bit of a problem concerning the idea of the final joke, and there’s no way i can explain this without spoiling it all

About the design, I liked it, though it doesn’t seem like someone who, you know, goes for ice creams… But the whole look is so toy-like that I didn’t feel it as out of place.

I’d like to hear your concerns on the final, because I was thinking on it too, but couldn’t manage to focus on what was wrong, and after all, the feeling was that it wasn’t that important. (I don’t think there’s a lot of people who read the comments, so eventually a spoiler warning will suffice.)

Like you say it’s a silliness really:(frame 00:37) the perspective of the road: it doesn’t work for me, I understand the “hiding” of the inclination for the final joke but, no way that can be right, not even with our eyes levelled with the inclination. I don’t know, it’s a visual sensation not easy to put into words, or maybe it’s ‘cos my english s*cks big time.
Let me also say that you’ve got a wonderful site aaand that I dig your stuff a lot

    Mmmm, well it’s very subtle…
But thanks to your comment I think I found the source of my early perplexity. If you look at the pink houses (church?) at 0:34 and 0:39 and then the one in the final scene, they doesn’t seem to have the same inclination.
It’s a dirty trick. But it worked! :)

P.S. Thanks for the compliments. I always try to have fun myself, above all. :)

True that!, it escaped my frame-by-frame examination.
But enough of the over-analizing of charming lil’Conehead! lol let’s move on…
