Boycott Yahoo

On April 27, 2005, Shi Tao (a Chinese journalist) received a ten-year prison term for sending information about a Communist Party decision through his Yahoo email account to a website based in the United States. (Source: Amnesty)

In response to this, I’m redirecting inviting all the surfers that come here thru the Yahoo search engine, to the Amnesty International campaign to highlight Yahoo’s responsibility towards human rights in China and wherever it operates.

If you are a blogger, take action and do the same, or at least help spreading the word. The code needed for the redirecting is simple, and you only need to add it to your template, just after the BODY tag. Here the code I used. (Feel free to suggest improvements!)

UPDATE: I know that Google is not better, nor is Microsoft. I’ll do the same as soon as Amnesty (or others) will promote similar campaign against them.

UPDATE2: I changed the code to eliminate some false positives (including BooYahoo)

UPDATE3: New code. Read here.

UPDATE3: Nuovo codice. Leggi qui.

tnx to eLLeGi and progosk

How are you going to boycott Google when your blog is hosted on Blogger?

Oh, maybe you could migrate to

Actually, I was trying out Wordpress… Anyway, I always loved contradictions!

But it seems that acting this way will lead only to:

    a) Visitors seeing theirselves on the Amnesty website without knowing why, and closing the windows without reading.

    b) Yahoo removing me from their indexes.

    c) Nobody joining me, for the fear of point b.

So I’m trying a softer approach, diplaying a brief and well visible text, for Yahoo users eyes only.

So let’s clarify – you don’t really give a rat about journalists jailed around the world, you are just supporting the cause of an organization that a few years ago was caught in a corruption scandal themselves.

Otherwise where are boycott Google, MSN, Intel and US Government buttons?

Heh, a Boycott Everything button. Great idea. Go on and implement!
I’ll be happy to join you when I’ll recover from the big headache I got right now…

    Hi dek,

I work at Amnesty and we obviously really liked your web action. We’re developing some new online actions around Yahoo as well as other companies and broader issues of Internet censorship and were thinking about promoting the little ‘dear yahoo user’ box idea to our worldwide membership –would you be comfortable with us using the idea? Instead of providing people with the full HTML script, we’ll be just providing a simple one-line of code (it might look a bit different) that will pull the rest from our server. That way, we can also keep it up to date with info on the status of those whose rights have been abused, progress, and other companies. We should be able to put a little ‘with thanks to blogger dek for the idea’ or something at the bottom. do you think that would be ok? We’d really like to get a lot more people behind this issue. Just an idea at this point…

    That would be great, Nick.
Just, consider that Yahoo removed me from their indexes, despite of my updated script.

Which country is better ,the creators country or the users one.

Difficult , the usa monitors it own population as well ,watching fox is hilarous.
but then again , it does not give a 10 year sentence , yet..
Anyone living in China knows sending an email can be lethal.

anyone typing this critisism versus the usa on an us- based blogger knows he can get into trouble entering the states.
(if you are not with us then you are against us…)
    Moahaha isn’t live a party Arnold ?
